Hi... if anyone could give me advice, I would appreciate it so much. I am in my early 20s and in Canada (Montreal) with my husband. The only problem is that I am not Canadian and do not yet have government health insurance. I have traveler's insurance, but it does not cover pregnancy. So basically, we will be paying everything out of pocket. We are not rich but are doing the best we can. The pregnancy was not planned but we are happy for the baby of course. This is our first child.
I am about 7-8 weeks pregnant and everything has seemed normal, but today for the first time, I had some bleeding. At first it was light pinkish and very light (like spotting). About 2 hours later, it became a little heaver and more red (but it was not like a full period... it was less). Later, it turned brownish and super light and I do not have bleeding now. All of this took place within a time span of about 4 hours, with very little cramping (almost none).
I went to the hospital and they told me that it would cost between 400-500 dollars just to open up a file as a new patient. Then maybe 400 or 500 to see a doctor plus the costs of tests like ultrasound, blood work, etc.
We really can't afford to pay that much in general, especially for one ultrasound. We went to the hospital because it was after hours, but because I didn't fill up a pad with blood or have severe cramping, a nurse that I spoke to earlier on the phone told me I should see a doctor but that it is probably not urgent right away.
We are trying to save as much as we can for the baby (and delivery) and paying over $400 just to open a file right now (not even for treatment!) is insane.
So we are waiting until morning to go to a clinic or regular doctor's office to see if I can get an ultrasound.
My question is... has anyone else ever experienced bleeding like I described around 7 or 8 weeks? Did you have a healthy pregnancy in the end or did you have a miscarriage?
And also, if you could recommend any questions I should ask the doctor and any good clinics for my situation in Quebec, I would appreciate it very much. Does anyone know the cost of getting an ultrasound done in Quebec? I heard maybe 100-200 dollars but does that include the cost of seeing the doctor?
In addition to stopping at the hospital, we stopped at 2 clinics (the rare ones that are open a little later) but one said they only had nurses on call and would not see us, and the other said they are full for the night... and neither does ultrasounds.
This is just crazy because all I want to do is get a simple ultrasound. I am having a really hard time finding a clinic and someone who cares about our situation.

to the poster who said to spend the money because its for the baby...yeah I definitely agree... I am going to a clinic right away in the morning and will probably have to pay a few hundred dollars there, but the hospital cost is something that we literally can't afford.... that would be over 1,000 dollars to get an ultrasound. p.s. I hope you are able to conceive!
Thanks for posting the risk factors. I am really surprised to find bleeding because before my pregnancy I was in really good health, not overweight, don't smoke or drink... and I figured that my age makes me less high risk.

update!.... I finally found a doctor who would treat me for less than $300 and it turns out that the baby is doing just fine... just chilling out while we were panicking, haha. My husband and I saw and heard the heartbeat so we are very excited :).

Uncontrolled diabetes greatly increases the risk of miscarriage. Women with controlled diabetes are not at higher risk of miscarriage. Because diabetes may develop during pregnancy (gestational diabetes), an important part of prenatal care is to monitor for signs of the disease.[14]
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a risk factor for miscarriage, with 30-50% of pregnancies in women with PCOS being miscarried in the first trimester.
